Senior 60+ Group Classes

At Rio Dance Studio we believe you shouldn’t stop dancing because you’re getting old.

Why? …..because you’ll only grow old if you do!

So, don’t retire from life! Come and join our Group Class specifically designed for Seniors. You’ll meet new dancing friends and enjoy a new lease on life.

Proven by Medical Journals and University Studies worldwide, dancing provides a wide range of health benefits, particularly for seniors.
Of course, it’s always best to check with you doctor before starting any new physical activity. Apart from being a lot of fun you’ll find our senior dance classes are low impact and will help keep you mobile and feeling young! So why not further aid the quality of life in your golden years?

Dance and Be Happy!

Below are some serious health benefits for you to consider.

Improved Strength, flexibility and Balance

Moving and staying agile is the best thing you can do for your body as you age. Self-body and spatial awareness are key to dancing and one of its great gifts. Feel more confident on and off the dance floor with a greater understanding of movement. Dancing will help improve your muscular strength, flexibility, core and posture. All these things lead to better balance and potentially helping to prevent falls.

Lessen Joint Pain

Are you suffering from joint pain? Regular low impact dance classes have shown to improve flexibility and reduce joint stress amongst seniors. If your doctor says it’s okay, consider adding dance to your weekly routine and enjoy the health benefits. At Rio Dance Studio we are happy to adjust classes to suit your ability and work around any ailments. Always work at your own pace, start slow and you will gain momentum over time.

Healthier Heart

Dance and have a happy heart. There’s no doubt that heart health is linked to cardiovascular exercise. Engaging in a low and moderate intensity sport like dancing is linked to lowering the mortality risk from cardiovascular disease.

Prevent Dementia

Did you know that learning to dance is linked to a lower risk of dementia? While puzzles and games are wonderful for your brain, dancing offers greater benefits. Challenge your brain by connecting thought patterns to coordinated physical movement. Add rhythmical timing, along with memorising dance sequences whilst using your eyes for spatial awareness and navigation. All this activity promotes better neuron growth and healthier brain functionality. Another benefit is the activation of the temporal and prefrontal cortexes of the brain which sharpens thoughts and aids faster thinking. If you didn’t think dancing was for you, think again!

Beat Depression

Rio Dance Studio’s motto is “Dance & Be Happy” Why? …. because we know of the health benefits gained from physical activity and literally dancing like nobody is watching. There’s a certain joy from putting on your favourite song, letting go and physically expressing happiness. Dancing is a positive form of therapy for those struggling with depression. It can help improve self-esteem and confidence, encouraging you to get off the couch and out of the house. Exercise, social interaction and upbeat music are all linked to positive mental health, so start dancing today and you’re sure to be stepping towards a happier life!

Stronger Bones

Yes, you heard right, dancing is great for your bones! The decline of bone strength is one of the added risks of aging, yet constant movement like dancing can help improve your overall bone health. With regular vigorous stimulation gained from dancing your bone cells continually turn over at a higher rate compared to minor exercises like walking. Elderly people leading a sedentary life experience higher bone loss and frailty, so get off your couch and start dancing today!
